Menopause treatment
Description
Menopause can be described or defined as the absence of menstrual periods for 12 months or more. Menopause is a transition process which begins with interrupted duration of menstrual cycle and ends with the final menstrual period. The transition period is referred to as perimenopause which means "the time around menopause" and is generally referred to as the menopausal transition phase. While peri
menopause is not a technically qualified medical term; it helps explains the menopausal transition which is the duration of time between when menopause begins to the last menstrual period. During menopause the function of the ovaries ceases and is marked by decreased production of estrogen which leads to various conditions like osteoporosis etc. The average age during which menopause sets is 51; however, it could anywhere between 45 and 55 years of age.

Causes
Menopause is a naturally occurring condition for women as they get older, usually setting in around between the ages of 45 and 55.
Surgical removal of the ovaries or oophorectomy which is mostly accompanied with removal of uterus or hysterectomy in women with regular menstrual cycle will result in immediate menopause;
Treatment of cancer through chemotherapy and radiation therapy also can lead t
o menopause;
Premature ovarian failure could occur prior to the age of 40 resulting in menopause.

Prevention
Menopause is a natural occurrence for all women, and can not be prevented. However, some of the symptoms can be lessened. Prevention of symptoms of menopause is possible by avoiding caffeine, alcohol, spicy foods and hot drinks, as well as introducing exercise and relaxation techniques into the daily life.
One can invest in aromatherapy, homeopathy, acupuncture, herbal medicines (such as ginseng
, evening primrose oil, red raspberry leaf tea, dong quai and black cohosh), and massage to help relax the body and mind.
Hot flashes can be prevented or minimized during summer by wearing cotton clothes that allow skin to breathe and staying indoors near the fan or air conditioning will reduce the number of hot flashes one experiences.
Bone loss can be prevented by administering calcium supplements; performing weight training exercises; drinking milk; and by practicing yoga.
Stress, anxiety, and depression resulting from hormone imbalance can be overcome by exercising; taking appropriate hormone replacement medications on time as prescribed; and by meditating and practicing yoga.

Traditional Treatment
Hormone therapy which includes estrogen and progesterone therapy; hormone therapy or HT is also referred to as:
Hormone replacement therapy or HRT;
Postmenopausal hormone therapy or PHT; and it consists of, estrogens or a combination of estrogens and progesterone or progestin. This therapy is mainly used to control the symptoms of menopause with relation to the decreasing levels of estrogen mark
ed by hot flashes and vaginal dryness.
Oral contraceptive pill is another form of conventional treatment which is administered in perimenopausal women and helps treat irregular vaginal bleeding.
Local or vaginal hormone treatment includes treating symptoms of estrogen deficiency of the vagina. It is often combined with oral estrogen treatment.
Bioidentical hormone therapy is administered in perimenopausal women and consists of hormone preparations or medications which contain hormones similar to those produced naturally by the human body.
Also alternatives to hormone treatment various symptoms of menopause can be treated with medication as follows:
Hot flashes can be treated with synthetic progesterone (Cycrin, Megace or Provera), methyldopa (Aldomet), clonidine (Catapres), synthetic androgen (Danazol) and also with low doses of paroxetine (Paxil) or fluoxetine (Prozac).
Painful intercourse due to vaginal dryness can be treated by using lubricating jelly like Astroglide, Replens, Lubrin and K-Y Jelly or by applying vaginal creams like Estrace or Premarin.
Urinary tract infections can be treated by drinking plenty of water or liquids and urinating as frequently and fully as one can.
Osteoporosis prevention and treatment includes medications like alendronate (Fosamax), risedronate (Actonel), raloxifene (Evista), and calcitonin. In addition to this, one can also take 1500 mg of calcium and 400 IU of vitamin D each day as well as exercise for about 45 to 60 minutes including weight-bearing exercises four times a week.
Heart disease can be treated and/or prevented by eating a low-fat, high fiber diet, exercising regularly, stopping smoking, and maintaining normal body weight.
