Nerve Damage treatment
Description
Nerve damage is also referred to as neuropathy and is a condition characterized by damaged nerves that affects proper functioning of the nervous system. Nerve damage can occur in any nerve in the body and the degree of damage too can vary from total loss of function to pressure being exerted on any nerve or nerves thereby disrupting the nerve signals from being relayed and transmitted. Also, there
could be more than 100 types of nerve damage; and depending upon their functionality that particular function could be affected. Autonomic nerve damage could result in dry eyes and mouth, vertigo, constipation, and other symptoms associated with digestion, and bladder dysfunction. Damage to motor nerves could result in twitching, paralysis, weakness and muscle atrophy. Sensory nerve damage could lead to tingling, pain, numbness, itching or burning, or unusual sensations often described as electric-like, freezing or tightening. Diabetic neuropathy resulting from diabetes could damage nerve fibers affecting both upper and lower extremities. Thus depending upon the type of nerve damage symptoms vary.

Causes
While there are several causes that lead to nerve damage, the main causes include aging-related causes and congenital causes. Other causes include autoimmune diseases like inflammatory bowel disease; Guillain-Barre syndrome; lupus; multiple sclerosis; and myasthenia gravis. Various other conditions that could cause nerve damage include cancer; accidents and trauma o various nerves like carpel tunn
el syndrome and direct or indirect injury to the nerves.
Diabetes is also another major cause for neuropathy. Infectious disease conditions like Lyme disease, Hepatitis C, HIV and the Herpes virus also cause nerve damage.

Prevention
• Too much blood glucose can lead to nerve damage hence it is important to ensure blood sugar levels are monitored regularly and kept under check.
• Smoking and drinking alcohol also damages blood vessels which supply oxygen to nerves and if these blood vessels are damaged they can in turn affect nerves and cause nerve damage hence it is important to curb smoking and drinking too much alcohol.
•
Hypertension is another important cause of nerve damage since it causes too much pressure on the blood vessels again leading to poor oxygen supply to the nerves.
• In addition to the above high levels of cholesterol too lead to nerve damage.
• Diabetes too can cause nerve damage or diabetic neuropathy hence it is important to take proper care in managing blood glucose levels especially once a person has been diagnosed with diabetes.
• Also, while exercising or participating in any physical activity it is important to take professional help and understand the technique right before beginning since any wrong range of motion can cause nerve damage. Patients suffering from nerve damage should be extra cautious while venturing into physical acitivites.

Common Symptoms
Depending upon the type of nerve damaged, symptoms vary for example damage to the autonomic nerves results in dry eyes and mouth, vertigo, constipation, and other symptoms associated with digestion, and bladder dysfunction. Damage to motor nerves could result in twitching, paralysis, weakness and muscle atrophy. Sensory nerve damage could lead to tingling, pain, numbness, itching or burning, or un
usual sensations often described as electric-like, freezing or tightening. Diabetic neuropathy resulting from diabetes could damage nerve fibers affecting both upper and lower extremities. Thus depending upon the type of nerve damage symptoms vary.
Other symptoms include:
Difficulty with balance accompanied with dizziness and syncopal episodes or fainting spells; Incontinence;
Inability to empty the bladder fully; leading to urinary tract infections;
Sexual dysfunction;
Nerve damage in men could lead to erectile dysfunction and in women it might cause problems related to problems getting aroused while engaging in sexual activity.
Digestion-related problems like loss of appetite, diarrhea, constipation and bloating.
Delayed responses like focusing visually when there are changes in light; removing an arm or leg from heat;
Numbness; lack in sensation especially pain when pinched, hit or otherwise injured, or feelings of tingling or numbness may be caused by damage to peripheral nerves.
Profuse sweating or absence of sweating in warm temperatures
Damage to nerves that sense temperature may cause excessive sweating or an inability to sweat in hot weather, and general difficulty in controlling body temperature in response to weather conditions.
