Narcolepsy treatment

Description
Narcolepsy is a chronic sleep disorder that occurs when the brain is unable to regulate the sleep cycle. A person with narcolepsy experiences sudden and random bursts of sleep and excessive sleepiness.
Causes
Narcolepsy is possibly caused by a decrease in hypocretin, a neurotransmitter that affects the regulation of sleep cycles.
Prevention
There is no known way to prevent Narcolepsy. Treatment of the general conditions may reduce the attacks throughout the day.
Common Symptoms
Common symptoms include cataplaxy or the loss of muscle tone, excessive daytime sleepiness, sleep paralysis, hallucinations, disrupted sleep at night, and obesity.
Traditional Treatment
There is no cure for narcolepsy but it may be treated with the following medications: Nuvigil, Xyrem, Sodium oxybate, Modafinil, Prozac, Zoloft, and Effexor.
Alternative Treatment
Narcoleptics often seek therapeutical help and reach out to psychologists, therapists, and support groups to help them deal with their condition.

Scientists have determind that alleles called human leukocyte antigen, located on chromosome 6, are related to narcolepsy. The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke continue to study and conduct research in order to learn more about narcolepsy.
