HIV / AIDS treatment

Description
AIDS/HIV has developed into a major disease, with over 33.2 million people living with it as of 2007. It is only transferable through contact with infected blood or sex. It wears down the immune system, deteriorating it over time, making the body susceptible to many illnesses.
Causes
Exposure to body fluids that are infected, or through sexual intercourse. It can be transferred through breastfeeding or at birth by the mother.
Prevention
Typical prevention can be regular screenings for the virus, and contracting HIV/AIDS can be prevented by not engaging in sexual activity with anyone infected. Also medical workers, working around blood and body fluid should not let it come in direct contact with them. Another widespread prevention method is education - people should be informed about the virus and the ways it is transmitted.
Common Symptoms
HIV symptoms are the contraction of many diseases that the body's immune system normally would take care of, called opportunistic infections. Also a high probability of developing infections and tumors develops.
Rare Symptoms
Pelvic inflammatory disease, short term memory loss, and Shingles can occur.
Traditional Treatment
Although no cure exists, HIV is slowed with antiretroviral drugs such as Abacavir, Didanosine, Emtricitabine, Lamivudine, Stavudine, Tenofovir, Zalcitabine, Zidovudine, and for the later stages of the virus Amprenavir, Atazanavir, Fosamprenavir, Indinavir, Lopinavir, Ritonavir, Saquinavir are used. Alternative Treatment
Taking Selenium supplements has been shown to slow the virus. Vitamin A, Zinc and Iron have also been shown to slow the effects of HIV in adults.
