The generic name of this medication is diphenhydramine and brand names are Benadryl; Genahist; Sominex; Unisom.

The active ingredient of this medication is diphenhydramine.

Primarily used to relieve symptoms of allergy; common cold; and hay fever. It is also used in the prevention and treatment of nausea; vomiting; and dizziness caused by motion sickness.

Diphenhydramine can also be used to facilitate relaxation and sleep.

Common Uses:

This medication is used to relieve symptoms of allergy; common cold; and hay fever. It is also used in the prevention and treatment of nausea; vomiting; and dizziness caused by motion sickness.

Off Label Uses:

None noted currently.

Side Effects:
Constipation;
Decreased coordination or dry mouth/nose/throat;
Dizziness;
Drowsiness;
Headache;
Irritability;
Stomach upset;
Vision changes (e.g., blurred vision).

Cautions / Warnings:

Not recommended in people with:
Allergic reactions to this medication or any of its ingredients;
Breathing problems (e.g., asthma, emphysema);
Difficulty urinating (e.g., due to an enlarged prostate gland);
Glaucoma;
Heart problems;
High blood pressure;
Liver disease;
Mood changes;
Overactive thyroid gland;
Seizures;
Stomach problems (e.g., ulcers, obstruction).

Drug Interactions:
Antispasmodics (e.g., atropine, belladonna alkaloids);
Drugs for Parkinson's disease (e.g., anticholinergics such as benztropine, trihexyphenidyl);
MAO inhibitors (e.g., furazolidone, isocarboxazid, linezolid, moclobemide, phenelzine, procarbazine, rasagiline, selegiline, tranylcypromine), scopolamine, tricyclic antidepressants (e.g., amitriptyline).
