Warnings
The generic name of this medication is Alendronate Sodium and brand name is Fosamax.
Alendronate Sodium is manufactured by Merck Sharp & Dohme.
The active ingredients of this medication are alendronate sodium and cholecalciferol. The inactive ingredients are cellulose and lactose.
Primarily prescribed for the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis and brittle bone disease in postmenopausal women.
Common Uses:
This medication is used in the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis and brittle bone disease in postmenopausal women.
Off Label Uses:
The Off lable Uses of this medication are:
It is also used to increase bone mass in men with osteoporosis and is prescribed for both men and women who have developed a form of osteoporosis sometimes caused by steroid medications such as prednisone;
This drug can also be used to relieve Paget's disease of bone, a painful condition that weakens and deforms the bones.
Side Effects:
Abdominal pain;
Acid regurgitation;
Bone and joint pain;
Constipation;
Diarrhea;
Gas;
Indigestion;
Muscle pain;
Nausea.
Cautions / Warnings:
Not recommended for following conditions:
Fosamax is not recommended for women on hormone replacement therapy, or for women with kidney problems;
Should not take Fosamax if the calcium level in your blood is low;
Who are pregnant and breast feeding.
Drug Interactions:
Calcium supplements, antacids, and some other oral medications will interfere with Alendronate Sodium.

I have headaches, dizziness,balance trouble, dry mouth,eyes, tired all the time.

On the evening of the first day that I took the dose (once per week), I started getting lower back pain/cramps which continued for 4 days. I also was nauseous. I also had other pains, upper back, neck, across my diaphram area to a lesser degree. I couldnt work, I couldnt do anything for the fatigue that the pain caused. And this is NOT normal for me - I am a VERY active person. My doctor said it wasnt the medication. Said it was likely I had pulled muscles in my back. Now I am supposed to take the next dose in 3 days and do this all over again!? This is NOT going to work for me!

Alendronate Sodium, shortly after taking the first dose gave me severe muscle cramps in my neck and back. After taking pain relievers the pain in my neck and back diminished only to reappear as severe muscle and bone pain in my chest. I have also been suffering from severe bowel cramping. The pain has returned to my neck and lower back, makes me suffer from fatigue and prevented me from doing anything but laying around. Worse drug I have every taken, and I would rather be beaten with a hose filled with sand than take this drug again (because the pain from being beaten with a hose filled with sand would go away faster than taking alendronate sodium). Patient beware!
