The generic name of this medication is amphotericin B Liposome and the brand name is Ambisome.

The active ingredient of this medication is amphotericin B.

Ambisome is manufactured by The Liposome Company.

It is primarily used in the treatment of fungal infections in certain patients; including patients who cannot use other forms of Ambisome.

Common Uses:

This medication is used in the treatment of fungal infection in certain patients, including patients who are unable to use other forms of Ambisome.

It is used to treat cryptococcal meningitis in HIV patients and to treat certain protozoal infections (visceral leishmaniasis).

Off Label Uses:

None noted currently.

Side Effects:
Chills;
Coughing;
Fever;
Headache;
Loss of appetite;
Muscle or joint pain;
Nausea;
Rapid heartbeat;
Sleeplessness;
Stomach pain;
Weight loss.

Cautions / Warnings:

Not recommended in people that:
Have allergic reactions to this medication or any of its ingredients and to soy;
Are taking "azole" antifungal agents like ketoconazole;
Have renal conditions like renal calculi or kidney stones.

It is also not advisable in pregnant women; those that are planning on becoming pregnant and nursing mothers.

Drug Interactions:
Azole antifungals like ketoconazole because the effectiveness of Ambisome may be reduced;
Aminoglycoside antibiotics like gentamicin;
Antineoplastic medicines like cisplatin; cyclosporine; or pentamidine;
Leukocyte transfusions;
Corticosteroids like prednisone or corticotropin;
Digoxin; flucytosine; skeletal muscle relaxants like tubocurarine or zidovudine.
