The generic name of this medication is aminocaproic acid and Amicar is the brand name.

The active ingredient of this medication is aminocaproic acid and the inactive ingredients are citric acid (anhydrous); and methylparaben.

Amicar is manufactured by Wyeth-Ayerst.

It is primarily used in the prevention and treatment of severe bleeding in patients with medical conditions that cause blood clots to dissolve faster than normal and lead to severe bleeding, including hemophilia; aplastic anemia; lung, prostate, stomach and cervical cancer; cirrhosis; and certain complications resulting from surgery.

Common Uses:

This medication is used in the prevention and treatment of severe bleeding in patients with medical conditions that causes blood clots to dissolve faster than normal and cause severe bleeding; also conditions like hemophilia; aplastic anemia; lung; prostate; stomach; and cervical carcinoma; cirrhosis of the liver; and complications resulting from surgery.

Off Label Uses:

Side Effects:
Confusion;
Decreased vision;
Diarrhea;
Dizziness;
Fatigue or tiredness;
General body discomfort;
Headache;
Lightheadedness;
Muscle aches or swelling;
Nausea;
Pain;
Ringing in the ears;
Stomach pain;
Stuffy nose;
Swelling;
Vomiting;
Watery eyes.

Cautions / Warnings:

Not recommended in people with:
Allergic reactions to this medication or any of its ingredients;
Blood clots;
Urinary tract bleeding;
Kidney disorders;
Liver conditions;
Blood disorders like hemophilia; uremia; blood clotting problems like active intravascular clotting; undiagnosed bleeding disorder; heart problems; or a history of seizures.

Drug Interactions:
Anti-inhibitor coagulant concentrates;
Factor IX complex concentrates.
