Warnings
The generic name of this medication is amiloride hydrochloride and brand names are Midamor and Apo-Amiloride.
The active ingredient of this medication is amiloride hydrochloride.
It is used as an adjunctive treatment modality in combination with thiazide diuretics or other kaliuretic-diuretics in treating congestive heartfailure or hypertension.
Common Uses:
It is used as an adjunctive treatment modality in combination with thiazide diuretics or other kaliuretic-diuretics in treating congestive heartfailure or hypertension in an attempt to:
Normalize serum potassium levels in patients who suffer from hypokalemia on the kaliuretic diuretic.
Prevent hypokalemia in patients who are at a risk hypokalemia were to develop especially patients with cardiac arrhythmias.
Off Label Uses:
Off-lable use includes, reduction of lithium-induced polyuria; slowed reduction of pulmonary function in patients with cystic fibrosis.
Side Effects:
Diarrhea;
Headache;
Loss of appetite;
Nausea;
Weakness.
Cautions / Warnings:
Not recommended in people with:
Hyperkalemia;
Diabetes mellitus;
Metabolic or respiratory acidosis.
It is also not advisable in pregnant women; those that are planning on becoming pregnant and nursing mothers.
Drug Interactions:
ACE inhibitors;
Angiotensin II receptor blockers;
Aminoglycosides;
Antidiabetics;
Beta-adrenergics;
Cyclosporine;
Digoxin;
Lithium;
NSAIDs or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs;
Potassium-containing products;
Spironolactone;
Triamterene.
