Warnings
The generic name of this medication is aminocaproic acid and the brand name is Amicar.
The active ingredient of this medication is aminocaproic acid and the inactive ingredients are citric acid (anhydrous) and methylparaben.
Amicar is manufactured by Wyeth-Ayerst.
This medication is used in the prevention and treatment of severe bleeding in patients with medical conditions that cause blood clots to dissolve faster than normal and lead to severe bleeding. Conditions include hemophilia; aplastic anemia; lung, prostate, stomach and cervical cancer; cirrhosis; and certain complications of surgery.
Common Uses:
This medication is used in the prevention and treatment of severe bleeding in patients with medical conditions that cause blood clots to dissolve faster than normal and lead to severe bleeding. Conditions include hemophilia; aplastic anemia; lung, prostate, stomach and cervical cancer; cirrhosis; and certain complications of surgery.
Off Label Uses:
None noted currently.
Side Effects:
Confusion;
Decreased vision;
Diarrhea; Dizziness; Fatigue or tiredness;
General body discomfort;
Headache; Lightheadedness;
Muscle aches or swelling;
Nausea;
Pain;
Ringing in the ears;
Stomach pain;
Stuffy nose;
Swelling;
Vomiting;
Watery eyes.
Cautions / Warnings:
Not recommended in people with:
Allergic reactions to this medication or any of its ingredients;
Blood clots;
Urinary tract bleeding;
Kidney disorders;
Liver disorders;
Blood disorders like hemophilia and uremia; blood clotting problems like active intravascular clotting; undiagnosed bleeding disorders;
Heart problems;
A history of seizures.
It is also not advisable in pregnant women; those that are planning on becoming pregnant and nursing mothers.
Drug Interactions:
Factor IX complex concentrates;
Anti-inhibitor coagulant concentrates.
