The generic name of this medication is isotretinoin and the various brand names are Accutane, Amnesteem, Claravis, and Sotret.

The active ingredient of this medication is isotretinoin.

Amnesteem is manufactured by Roche Pharmaceuticals.

This medication is used to treat severe nodular acne which has failed to respond to other treatment modalities including antibiotics.

Common Uses:

This medication is used to treat severe nodular acne which has failed to respond to other treatment modalities including antibiotics.

Off Label Uses:

None noted currently.

Side Effects:
Depressed mood, difficulty concentrating, insomnia, crying bouts, aggressive behavior, change in behavior patterns, visual hallucinations, suicidal thoughts;
Sudden numbness, more often experienced on one side of the body;
Blurred vision, sudden and severe headache or pain behind the eyes, accompanied with vomiting in some cases;
Hearing problems, hearing loss, or tinnitus or ringing in the ears;
Seizure (convulsions);
Severe pain in the upper abdomen radiating to the back, nausea and vomiting, rapid heart beat or tachycardia.

Cautions / Warnings:

It is not recommended in pregnant women, those intending to become pregnant, and nursing mothers.

It is also not recommended in people with:
Allergic reactions to this medication or any of its ingredients;
A history of depression or any other form of mental disorder;
Heart disease;
High cholesterol or triglycerides;
Diabetes;
Liver disease.

Drug Interactions:
Steroids (prednisone and others);
Seizure medication such phenytoin (Dilantin); or
A tetracycline antibiotic such as demeclocycline (Declomycin), doxycycline (Doryx, Vibramycin), minocycline (Minocin), or tetracycline (Brodspec, Sumycin, Tetracap).

About Isotretinoin

Isotretinoin (INN) (IPA) is a medication used for the treatment of severe acne. It is sometimes used in prevention of certain skin cancers. It is a retinoid i.e. it is derived from vitamin A and is found in small quantities naturally in the body. Oral isotretinoin is marketed under various trade names, most commonly Accutane (Roche), Amnesteem (Mylan), Claravis (Barr), Sotret (Ranbaxy), or Roaccutane (Roche) or NetLook (Delta Pharma) while topical isotretinoin is most commonly marketed under the trade names Isotrex or Isotrexin (Stiefel).
