Annatto is a shrub and its seeds and leaves are considered to be of medicinal value. Its chemical composition includes; alkaloids, antraquinona, esteroids, flavonoids, and saponnins which are useful in treating various conditions like diarrhea, diabetes, fever, rheumatism, prostate inflammation, and certain renal and hepatic conditions.

It is available in capsule form and the recommended dosage is one capsule three times a day.

It is also known by other names like Achiote, Achiotillo, Annotta, Arnotta, Bija, Bixa orellana, Latkan, Lipstick Tree, Roucou.
