The generic name of this medication is disulfiram and brand name is Antabuse.
The active ingredient of this medication is disulfiram.
Mainly used in treating alcoholism.
Common Uses:
This medication is used in treating alcoholism.
Off Label Uses:
None noted currently.
Side Effects:
Drowsiness
Headache
Metallic or garlic taste in mouth
Cautions / Warnings:
Not recommended for patients with the following conditions:
If allergic to any ingredient in Antabuse or other similar medicines.
Usage not recommended under the influence of alcohol.
If there is severe heart disease, a blockage of coronary arteries or a mental disorder (psychosis).
If taking metronidazole or an alcohol-containing medicine (certain HIV protease inhibitors such as amprenavir), cough syrups, other liquid medicines).
If there is brain damage, diabetes, heart or lung disease.
Drug Interactions:
Alcohol-containing medicines (certain HIV protease inhibitors [amprenavir], cough syrups, other liquid medicines or metronidazole.
Anticoagulants (warfarin), benzodiazepines (diazepam), isoniazid or phenytoin.

About Disulfiram
Disulfiram is a drug used to support the treatment of chronic alcoholism by producing an acute sensitivity to alcohol. Trade names for disulfiram in different countries are Antabuse and Antabus manufactured by Odyssey Pharmaceuticals. Disulfiram is also being studied as a treatment for cocaine dependence as it prevents the breakdown of dopamine (a neurotransmitter whose release is stimulated by cocaine); the excess dopamine results in increased anxiety, higher blood pressure, restlessness and other unpleasant symptoms.
