The generic name of this medication is chloroquine and the brand name is Aralen.
The active ingredient of this medication is chloroquine phosphate.
This medication is used in treating and suppressing acute or sudden attacks of certain strains of malaria and certain types of parasitic infections like extraintestinal amebiasis.
Common Uses:
This medication is used in treating and suppressing acute or sudden attacks of certain strains of malaria and certain types of parasitic infections like extraintestinal amebiasis.
Off Label Uses:
None noted currently.
Side Effects:
Loss of appetite;
Clumsiness;
Diarrhea;
Dizziness;
Mild headache;
Nausea;
Abdominal cramps;
Vomiting.
Cautions / Warnings:
Not recommended for patients with the following conditions:
Who are allergic to any ingredient in Aralen;
Who have vision problems or retinal changes;
Who are taking arsenic, astemizole, terfenadine, cimetidine, cisapride, quinacrine, or dofetilide;
Pregnant women/women planning to become pregnant.
Drug Interactions:
Cimetidine or quinacrine;
Ampicillin, rabies vaccine, or thyroid hormones (eg, levothyroxine);
Arsenic, astemizole, cisapride, dofetilide, or terfenadine;
Cyclosporine.
