This native perennial plant of North America is noted for the unusual shape of its leaves and is a well-known wildflower, appearing in late spring. Arum comes from ar, an Arabic word meaning 'fire." Arum triph. is used mainly to treat hay fever, especially when the left nostril is the worst affected, and colds. Symptoms include redness around the mouth and lower face with cracked, painful, and bleeding lips. The nose and inside of the mouth are also cracked and bleeding and there are cracks at the corners of the mouth. There is a hot nasal discharge and the saliva is hot. In addition, this remedy is given for chronic hoarseness and loss of voice caused by exposure to cold, windy weather and too much singing.
