Warnings
The generic name of this medication is mesalamine and brand names are Asacol, Lialda, and Pentasa.
The active ingredient of this medication is mesalamine. Inactive ingredients include colloidal silicon dioxide, dibutyl phthalate, edible black ink, iron oxide red, iron oxide yellow, lactose, magnesium stearate, methacrylic acid copolymer B (Eudragit S), polyethylene glycol, povidone, sodium starch glycolate, and talc.
Asacol is used to treat ulcerative colitis, proctitis, and proctosigmoiditis.
Common Uses:
Asacol is used to treat ulcerative colitis; proctitis; and proctosigmoiditis.
Off Label Uses:
Asacol is used in the prevention and treatment of recurring symptoms caused by ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease.
Side Effects:
Mild nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramps, diarrhea, gas;
Fever, sore throat, or other flu symptoms;
Abdominal discomfort;
Headache or dizziness;
Fatigue;
Skin rash.
Cautions / Warnings:
Not recommended in people with:
Allergic reactions to this medication; mesalamine or to aspirin or other salicylates like Disalcid, Doan's Pills, Dolobid, Salflex, Tricosal, and others;
Pyloric stenosis;
A history of allergy to sulfasalazine (Azulfidine);
Cardiovascular conditions;
Renal disorders.
It is also not recommended in pregnant women; women that are planning on becoming pregnant and nursing mothers.
Drug Interactions:
Azathioprine (Imuran) or mercaptopurine (Purinethol);
Pentamidine (Nebupent, Pentam);
Tacrolimus (Prograf);
Amphotericin B (Fungizone, AmBisome, Amphotec, Abelcet);
Antibiotics such as capreomycin (Capastat), rifampin (Rifadin, Rimactane, Rifater), vancomycin (Vancocin, Vancoled);
Antiviral medicines such as acyclovir (Zovirax), adefovir (Hepsera), cidofovir (Vistide), or foscarnet (Foscavir);
Cancer medicine such as aldesleukin (Proleukin), carmustine (BiCNU, Gliadel), Cisplatin (Platinol), ifosfamide (Ifex), oxaliplatin (Eloxatin), streptozocin (Zanosar), or tretinoin (Vesanoid).

When I was diagnosed with UC in December 09 and was prescribed Asacol and a restricted diet, it took a while to get back on my feet and normal again. I was afraid to start eating again, but slowly starting putting foods back in. There are some I can never eat again, but that's okay. My weight returned and I am stronger and healthier than before. I don't like the "thinning/lossing" hair, but I manage.
