There is some scientific evidence that the chemicals in asafoetida might help treat irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), and also protect against high cholesterol and high triglycerides. There is insufficient evidence regarding the presence of chemicals called coumarins in asafoetida which can thin the blood and its effectiveness in treating various conditions like bronchitis, asthma, pertussis or "whooping cough," hoarseness, hysteria, intestinal gas, stomach upset, irritable colon, convulsions, nerve disorders, menstrual problems, calluses, and other conditions.

Not recommended in people with:
Bleeding disorders;
High or low blood pressure;
Stomach or intestine infection, or condition;
History of convulsions or epilepsy.

It is also not recommended in pregnant women; women planning on becoming pregnant; and nursing mothers.
