The generic name of this medication is hydroxyzine and brand names are Atarax and Vistaril.

The active ingredients of this medication is hydroxyzine hydrochloride. Inactive ingredients include hydroxyzine hydrochloride (hydroxyzine); acacia; carnauba wax; dibasic calcium phosphate; gelatin; lactose; magnesium stearate; precipitated calcium carbonate;
shellac; sucrose; talc; white wax; sodium hydroxide; starch; and titanium dioxide.

Atarax functions as a sedative used in the treatment and management of anxiety/tension.

Common Uses:

Atarax works as a sedative used to treat and manage anxiety/tension.

Off Label Uses:

The Off lable Uses of this medication are:
It is also used together with other medications given for anesthesia;
Hydroxyzine may also be used to control nausea and vomiting;
Atarax is also used to treat allergic skin reactions such as hives or contact dermatitis.

Side Effects:
Cold or allergy medicine;
Sedatives;
Narcotic pain medicine;
Sleeping pills;
Muscle relaxers and medicine for seizures, depression, or anxiety.

Cautions / Warnings:

Not recommended in people with:
Allergic reactions to hydroxyzine;
Seizure disorder;
Liver disorders;
Renal disorders.

It is also not recommended in pregnant women; women planning on becoming pregnant and nursing mothers.

Drug Interactions:
Restless muscle movements in the eyes, tongue, jaw, or neck;
Tremor (uncontrolled shaking);
Confusion; or
Seizure (convulsions).
