Common Uses:
This medication is used to treat blood clots like deep vein thrombosis-DVT or pulmonary embolus-PE and/or to prevent new clots from forming in the body. Preventing harmful blood clots helps reduce risk of stroke and heart attack.
Off Label Uses:
None noted currently.
Side Effects:
Nausea;
Loss of appetite;
Abdominal discomfort.
Cautions / Warnings:
Not recommended in patients with:
Allergic reactions to this medication or any of its ingredients;
Bleeding disorders like hemophilia;
Liver disease;
History of alcohol use/abuse; mental/mood disorders (including memory problems); History of recent major injury/surgery;
Bleeding problems (like bleeding of the stomach/intestines, bleeding in the brain);
Blood vessel disorders (such as aneurysms); blood disorders (such as anemia, polycythemia), heart failure, and thyroid problems.
It is not recommended in pregnant women, women that are planning on becoming pregnant; and nursing mothers.
Drug Interactions:
Aspirin and aspirin-like drugs (salicylates);
Imatinib;
Mifepristone;
Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs such as ibuprofen, Naproxen, celecoxib).
