The generic name of this medication is almotriptan and brand name is Axert.

The active ingredient of this medication are almotriptan malate.

Ortho-McNeil Pharmaceutical is the manufacturer of this medication.

Used in the treatment of acute migraine headaches with or without aura (eg, dark spots, flashing lights, wavy lines).

Common Uses:

Used in the treatment of acute migraine headaches with or without aura (eg, dark spots, flashing lights, wavy lines).

Off Label Uses:

None noted currently.

Side Effects:
Dizziness;
Drowsiness;
Dry mouth;
Headache;
Nausea;
Sleepiness;
Vomiting.

Cautions / Warnings:

Not recommended in people with:
Allergic reactions to this medication or any of its ingredients;
A history of ischemic heart disease (eg, angina, heart attack), coronary artery disease (CAD);
Uncontrolled hypertension;
Hemiplegic or basilar migraine headaches.

It is also not recommended in pregnant women; women that are planning on becoming pregnant and nursing mothers.

Drug Interactions:
Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) (eg, fluoxetine), serotonin norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs) (eg, duloxetine), or sibutramine;
Azole antifungals (eg, ketoconazole), ergot alkaloids (eg, ergotamine), HIV protease inhibitors (eg, ritonavir), macrolide antibiotics (eg, erythromycin), MAOIs (eg, phenelzine), verapamil, or another serotonin 5-HT1 receptor.
