The generic name of this medication is levobunolol ophthalmic and brand names are Akbeta, Betagan, Levobunolol.

The active ingredient of this medication is levobunolol hydrochloride. Inactive ingredients include benzalkonium chloride which is a preservative; edetate disodium; polyvinyl alcohol (Liquifilm); potassium phosphate monobasic; sodium chloride; sodium metabisulfite; sodium phosphate dibasic; sodium hydroxide or hydrochloric acid to adjust pH.

It is manufactured by Allergan Inc.

Adminstered alone or with other medications as a combination drug in treating both high pressure inside the eye due to glaucoma (open-angle type) or other eye conditions like ocular hypertension.

Common Uses:

Adminstered alone or with other medications as a combination drug in treating both high pressure inside the eye due to glaucoma (open-angle type) or other eye conditions like ocular hypertension.

Off Label Uses:

None noted currently.

Side Effects:
Temporary burning/stinging of the eye, itchy/red eyes, headache or dizziness.

Cautions / Warnings:

Not recommended in patients with the following conditions:
If there are allergic reactions to this medication or to other beta-blockers like timolol, metipranolol.
If there are allergies to the preservatives contained in this medication like benzalkonium chloride or to sulfites.
Severe breathing disorders like asthma or a history of asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease-COPD.
Certain forms of heart rhythm problems like sinus bradycardia, second-or-third-degree atrioventricular block.
Lung conditions like bronchitis or emphysema.
Diabetes.
Heart failure (treated, stable type).
It is not recommended during pregnancy, pre-pregnancy and in nursing mothers.

Drug Interactions:
Certain diabetes drugs like insulin.
Sulfonylureas like glyburide.
Digoxin.
Drugs for high blood pressure like clonidine, reserpine, oral beta blockers like propranolol and calcium channel blockers like diltiazem.
Epinephrine.
Phenothiazines like prochlorperazine.
