Description | Uses & Side Effects | Warnings

The active ingredient of this medication is fentanyl and the brand name is Duragesic.

It is used to provide relief from chronic pain which requires continous administration of opioids for prolonged periods of time;
Conditions that do not respond to other medications like non-steroidal analgesics; opioid combination medications; or immediate-release opioids.

It is available in patches which are administered transdermally only.

Common Uses:

Used to provide relief from moderate-to-severe pain like in cancer, which:
Needs regular opioid administration especially over prolonged periods of time;
Does not respond to other methods like non-steroidal analgesics, opioid combination products, or immediate-release opioids.

Off Label Uses:

None noted currently.

Side Effects:
Confusion;
Constipation;
Dizziness;
Drowsiness;
Dry mouth;
Nausea;
Sweating, mild itching, redness at the site of application;
Vomiting;
Weakness.

Cautions / Warnings:

This medication is to administered only in people who have been on moderate-to-large amount of a powerful narcotic medications;
Not advisable in people suffering from acute pain, or pain following surgery, or mild pain;
Not recommended in children under two years of age;
Not recommended in pregnant women and nursing mothers.

Possible interactions include:
Antibiotics;
Carbamazepine;
Diltiazem;
HIV medicines;
Monoamine oxidase inhibitors like, furazolidone; linezolid; and isocarboxazide;
Naltrexone;
Phenytoin;
Rifampin;
Sibutramine;
St. John's wort;

For those who need around the clock coverage for pain this is an excellent choice. Its best to call your pharmacy to make sure this can be filled on the day it is due,this drug is typically not in stock and may need to be ordered ahead of time
