The generic name of this medication is levofloxacin and brand name is Levaquin.

Levaquin is manufactured and marketed by Ortho McNeil Company.

The active ingredients of this medication is levofloxacin and Inactive ingredients is water for injection.

It is primarily used in the treatment of certain forms of bacterial infections.

Common Uses:

This medication is used in the treatment of certain forms of bacterial infections like:
Acute bacterial sinusitis caused due to Haemophilus influenzae; Moraxella catarrhalis; or Streptococcus pneumoniae;
Acute bacterial exacerbation of chronic bronchitis caused because of methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae, Haemophilus parainfluenzae, or Moraxella catarrhalis;
Nosocomial pneumonia caused due to methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Serratia marcescens, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae, or Streptococcus pneumoniae.
Community-acquired pneumonia caused due to methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae, Haemophilus parainfluenzae, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Moraxella catarrhalis, Chlamydia pneumoniae, Legionella pneumophila, or Mycoplasma pneumoniae;
Complicated skin and skin structure infections caused due to methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus, Enterococcus faecalis, Streptococcus pyogenes, or Proteus mirabilis;
Uncomplicated skin and skin structure infections caused due to methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus or Streptococcus pyogenes;
Chronic bacterial prostatitis caused due to Escherichia coli, Enterococcus faecalis, or methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus epidermidis.
Complicated urinary tract infections caused due to Enterococcus faecalis, Enterobacter cloacae, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Proteus mirabilis, or Pseudomonas aeruginosa;
Acute pyelonephritis caused by Escherichia coli;
Uncomplicated urinary tract infections caused due to Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae or Staphylococcus saprophyticus;
Inhalational of anthrax following exposure - to reduce the incidence or progression of disease following exposure to aerosolized Bacillus anthracis.

Off Label Uses:

Off-label and investigational uses include:
Community-acquired pneumonia in children;
Endocarditis;
Enterocolitis (Shigella spp.);
Epididymitis (non-gonococcal);
Gonococcal infections;
Gynecological infections;
Legionnaires disease (Legionella pneumophila);
Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID);
Peritonitis;
Tuberculosis;
Typhoid fever.

Side Effects:
Constipation;
Diarrhea;
Dizziness;
Gas;
Headache;
Lightheadedness;
Nausea;
Stomach pain.

Cautions / Warnings:

Not recommended in people that:
Are allergic reactions to this medication or any of its ingredients; or to any other quinolone antibiotic like ciprofloxacin etc;
Have certain forms of irregular heartbeat;
Are taking cisapride or certain antiarrhythmics like amiodarone; procainamide; quinidine; sotalol.

Not advsiable in pregnant women and those that are planning on becoming pregnant.

Drug Interactions:
Antiarrhythmics (eg, amiodarone, procainamide, quinidine, sotalol);
Insulin or oral diabetes medicines (eg, glyburide);
Anticoagulants (eg, warfarin);
Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) (eg, ibuprofen);
Serotonin norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs) (eg, duloxetine).

About Levofloxacin

Levofloxacin is an advanced generation fluoroquinolone antibiotic, marketed by Ortho-McNeil under the trade name Levaquin in the United States. In Europe, it is marketed by Sanofi-Aventis under the trade name Tavanic, in Chile as Gatigol by Alpes Selection, and in Asia it is marketed by Daiichi under the trade name Cravit. Levofloxacin was launched in the Japanese market in 1993, and thus has had more than 13 years of testing in efficiency and safety globally. Chemically, levofloxacin is the S-enantiomer (L-isomer) of ofloxacin, and has approximately twice the potency of ofloxacin. It works by inhibiting DNA gyrase, an enzyme that negatively supercoils DNA.

Levofloxacin is effective against a number of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. Because of its broad spectrum of action, levofloxacin is frequently prescribed.
