The nuts from this tree have been used by Hindus for all kinds of skin complaints. The acrid black juice, found between the external rind and the nut, was used to burn off warts and to clean leg ulcers. The Hindus also mixed it with chalk to make an ink for marking linen. The Arabians used the juice chiefly for mental illness, loss of memory, paralysis, and spasms. This remedy is used when there is a sensation of constricted pain, as if the gut or anus is plugged, and the body feels as if there are bands around it. These symptoms may be associated with hemorrhoids and indigestion. Anacard. or. is also given for constipation, rheumatism, and duodenal ulcers that feel better after eating but cause acute discomfort once food has been digested.
