About Mevacor
Mevacor (lovastatin) is a prescription medication that has been licensed to treat several conditions. Mevacor is the brand name and Lovastatin is the generic name. It is a cholesterol lowering agent isolated from a strain of Aspergillus terreus. After oral ingestion, lovastatin, which is an inactive lactone, is hydrolyzed to the corresponding β-hydroxyacid form. Mevacor tablets are available as 20 mg and 40 mg tablets for oral administration. In addition to the active ingredient lovastatin, each tablet contains the following inactive ingredients: cellulose, lactose, magnesium stearate, and starch. Butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA) is added as a preservative. Tablets MEVACOR 20 mg also contain FD&C Blue 2 aluminum lake. Mevacor tablets 40 mg also contain D&C Yellow 10 aluminum lake and FD&C Blue 2 aluminum lake. Mevacor is mainly used in the treatment of the below-mentioned conditions: Treating high cholesterol (hypercholesterolemia) Slowing down the progression of atherosclerosis (narrowing and hardening of the arteries) in people with heart disease Preventing heart or blood vessel disease (known as cardiovascular disease). The patent for Mevacor has expired, and a generic form is now available. Generic Mevacor is sold under the name Lovastatin tablets. Generic Mevacor is available in the following strengths: Lovastatin tablets 10 mg Lovastatin tablets 20 mg Lovastatin tablets 40 mg Mevacor is manufactured several different companies, like: Actavis US Apotex Corporation Genpharm Lupin Pharmaceuticals, Inc. About Lovastatin
Lovastatin is a member of the drug class of statins, used for lowering cholesterol (hypolipidemic agent) in those with hypercholesterolemia and so preventing cardiovascular disease.
