Homepathic practitioners commenced the use of Pyrogenium in 1880 via the contribution of Dr. Drysdale. This is an infusion that is prepared by blending beef with water and allowing it to stand for three weeks. Post straining, the clear amber liquid called sepsin is blended with glycerine and the end product is called Pyrogenium. In large doses, Dr Drysdale found that Pyrogenium caused changes in blood and tissues that would be equivalent to blood poisoining from wounds; but in small doses produced full recovery from condition.

Pyrogenium is usually administered to treat septic conditions. It acts on the blood and treats symptoms of blood poisoning. The symptoms treated include high fever, cold sweats, abnormally high pulse, severe aching in the bones and acute body ache. The other symtpoms may include dry, cracked and shiny tongue accompanied by acute restlessness. There may be severe burning sensation in association with an abscess. Bodily discharges may be highly offensive.
