Gia Carangi

Gia Carangi (1960-1986), American fashion model. Gia was one of the first American supermodels and graced the covers of several Vogue and Cosmopolitan magazines. Carangi developed an HIV infection and died at the age of 26.

Carangi moved to New York when she was 17 and quickly rose to become a top model of the day. She was known to be a sexually curious teenager and frequented clubs such as Studio 54. With drugs readily available in her new world she developed an addiction to heroin, which eventually landed her in rehab. After rehab, she was received poorly by the modeling industry and had trouble finding work. She’d lost some of her looks and vitality to substance abuse.
