Isaac Asimov
Isaac Asimov (1920—1992), author and professor of biochemistry. Asimov wrote and edited more than 500 books, the most famous being his Foundation series, Galactic Empire series, and Robot series. He is regarded as one of the best science fiction writers of all time, but he also wrote popular science books, mystery, fantasy, and non-fiction. Asimov was a long-time member and vice president of Mensa International, the oldest and most widely known high-IQ society.
Asimov was born in Russia, but his family immigrated to the US when he was three years old. He attended the New York City public schools, and went on to Columbia University, earning a PhD in biochemistry. He then moved to Boston to teach at the Boston University School of Medicine. He wrote in his free time, and was even
tually tenured and promoted to professor.
Asimov suffered from a heart attack in 1977 and underwent triple bypass surgery in 1983, unknowingly contracting the HIV virus from infected blood. He had a high fever after the surgery.
Then, “A few years after Isaac's bypass surgery, he had some symptoms that made me read the medical journals—and then I wanted him tested for HIV," wrote Asimov’s widow to Locus magazine. “The internist and cardiologist said I was wrong. Testing was done only when he was seriously ill and in the hospital for surgery on his by then infected heart valves.” (By the time he was tested, Asimov’s T cells were at half the normal level.) “The surgery was cancelled, and the doctors told us not to reveal Isaac's HIV. I argued with the doctors privately about this secrecy, but they prevailed, even after Isaac died. The doctors are dead now, and when Prometheus books asked me to write "It's Been a Good Life", Isaac's daughter and I agreed to go public on the HIV.”
