Eva Perón

Eva Perón (1919-1952), affectionately known simply as "Evita," was the second wife of President Juan Domingo Perón and served as First Lady of Argentina from 1946 until 1952. She was also the first person in Argentina to receive chemotherapy although—inconceivably to the modern patient—she was never told about the cervical cancer that killed her. At the time, the Pap smears that have now dramatically reduced the incidence of cervical cancer were not routinely given. Her story is told in the blockbuster musical Evita.

Evita, who was born illegitimate and had worked as an actress prior to her marriage, had a shiningly genuine compassion for the poor and was particularly beloved by the low-income Argentines called the descamisados, the shirtless ones. She worked ardently for women's suffrage, formed the first real women's political party, and ran the Ministries of Labor and Health. The Argentine Congress eventually gave her the official title of "Spiritual Leader of the Nation."

The progression of Evita's illness smacked of political maneuvering. She had originally complained of abdominal pain, weakness and fainting and, so the story goes, undergone an appendectomy. Because it's unlikely that a doctor would mistake cervical cancer for appendicitis, it's unclear whether this was a case of a badly botched diagnosis or simple political expediency. Evita was so adored by the Argentine electorate that her confident presence by Juan Perón's side was considered essential to his re-election.
A few months after the appendectomy, the symptoms returned and an American doctor, George Pack, secretly performed a hysterectomy with lymph node dissection, entering the operating theatre only after she had been anesthetized so that she would continue to believe that an Argentine surgeon had operated on her for vaguely defined "female problems." When the symptoms resumed yet again she was given radiotherapy and then chemotherapy with nitrogen mustard.

By this time she weighed only 36 kg, and when she rode triumphantly through the streets of Buenos Aires with her husband after his re-election in 1952—the first election in which women could vote—her lavish fur coat actually hid a frame that allowed the severely weakened First Lady to stand. She took a triple dose of pain medication before the parade, and a double dose after it.

Juan Perón's first wife had also died of cervical cancer at the age of 28. We now know that cervical cancer is usually caused by persistent cases of the human papillomavirus (HPV), which is extremely common but usually shrugged off by a strong immune system. Promiscuity, which exposes someone to multiple strains of HPV, is a major risk factor. (Smoking is another— smokers are up to 26 times more likely to get a persistent infection). Juan Perón was certainly something of a playboy, even joking when asked about allegations that his current mistress was only 13 years old (he was 59 at the time) "Well, I’m not superstitious!"
It's doubtful whether Evita would have died of cervical cancer had she been born a decade or two later. These days, the pre-cancerous cells have almost certainly been caught by a routine pap smear, and most patients are increasingly proactive about understanding medical issues and comparing treatments....View full story
