Leeches, your circulation’s favorite friend
Usually when you yowl the word “leech!” you’re spitting venom about your parasitic brother-in-law, but if you’d accidentally loped off a couple of fingers you might use a much more pleasant tone. Leeches—perhaps Hirudo medicinalis, the official name for the European medicinal leech, sounds less off-putting—are the microsurgeon’s best ally.
Microsurgeons have gotten pretty good at reconnecting small blood vessels when reattaching a digit or two. The trouble is, veins are more fragile, so although blood can enter a reconnected body part through the artery, it often finds the way out blocked by a clot or a crushed area of the vein. End result: a blood-congested and unhealthy mess. Leeches, however, come equipped with a medicinal arsenal. Their saliva contains not only an anesthetic
that makes their sharp little teeth unnoticeable but also a powerful blood vessel dilator and an extremely potent anti-coagulant, called hirudin, which continue to work on restoring healthy circulation even after the satiated leech drops off.
Hirudotherapy, aka leech treatment, is also used for conditions such as varicose veins, cardiovascular disease, certain skin conditions, and inflammation of the middle ear; it can even relieve the inflammation and pain of osteoarthritis. Doctors often prescribe antibiotics to go along with the leeches—it’s impossible to totally sterilize even specially-bred leeches—and it’s important to guard against too much blood loss.
