An Israeli scorpion’s sting zeroes in on cancer cells
The median survival rate for people with the deadly cancer glioblastoma multiforme is about 15 months. Thanks to the vicious sting of the deathstalker scorpion, a patient enrolled in a trial of a new “drug” at the University of Chicago has survived three times the median—and is now back at work and walking several miles a day.
The experimental drug, I131-TM601, combines radioactive iodine with part of a toxin from the venom of the Israeli desert scorpion. According to researchers, “The toxin fragment recognizes and binds to receptors found on the surface of glioma cells but not on normal, healthy cells.” When given intravenously, it zeroes straight in on the cancerous cells to both restrict the tumor growth and deliver a lethal dose of radiation, all without harming surrounding
cells.
What’s more, patients with deadly gliomas usually receive ongoing treatment; the scorpion drug was effective after just a limited number of doses. Side effects can include fatigue, brain swelling, headaches, confusion and vision loss; the UC patient needed physical therapy to recover from the treatment but counts it as well worth it.
