Tretinoin Microsphere is available under the brand name Retin-A Micro; tretinoin being the active ingredient. Other ingredients of this medication include; purified water; carbomer 974P; carbomer 934P; glycerin; disodium EDTA; propylene glycol; sorbic acid; PPG-20 methyl glucose ether distearate; cyclomethicone and dimethicone copolyol; benzyl alcohol; trolamine; and butylated hydroxtoluene.

It is used primarily in the treatment of acne vulgaris and is available in gel form meant for external use only. It belongs to the retinoid group of medications and functions by affecting growth and development of skin cells.

Common Uses:

Used in the treatment of acne.

Off Label Uses:

Anti-wrinkle agent.

Side Effects:
Immediate and brief side effects at the site of application include:
Dryness of skin;
Itching;
Mild burning;
Scaling;
Skin redness;
Stinging sensation;
Worsening of acne in the first 2-4 weeks of use.

Serious side effects include:
Blistering;
Conjunctivitis;
Crusting;
Discoloration of the skin;
Intense burning;
Swelling of skin,
Swelling of the eyelid.

Serious allergic reactions include:
Allergic reactions including rash, itching, swelling of the mouth, throat, etc.
Dizziness;
Shortness of breath.

Cautions / Warnings:

Not recommended in people with prevailing eczema or history of eczema;
Increases photosensitivity hence wearing protective clothing and sunscreen while skin is exposed to direct sunlight is recommended;
Avoid removing body hair through electrolysis, waxing, and/or chemical-based creams while on this medication;
Not recommended in pregnant women and nursing mothers.

Interacts with products containing:
Alcohol;
Alpha hydroxy acid;
Benzoyl peroxide;
Fluoroquinolones;
Glycolic acid;
Hydrochlorothiazide;
Lime;
Menthol;
Phenothiazines;
Resorcinol;
Salicylic acid;
Sulfamethoxazole.

About Tretinoin

Tretinoin is the acid form of vitamin A and so also known as all-trans retinoic acid or ATRA. It is a drug commonly used to treat acne vulgaris and keratosis pilaris. It is available as a cream or gel (brand name Retin-A). It is also used to treat acute promyelocytic leukemia (APML).
