Tropicamide Ophthalmic Solution, is an anticholinergic medication.

The active ingredients of this solution are tropicamide and the inactive ingredients are boric acid; hydrochloric acid; edetate disodium; purified water; and benzalkonium chloride which is a preservative. Sodium hydroxide and/or hydrochloric acid could be used to balance the pH levels.

Also available in powder form.

Used primarily for pupil dilation and cycloplegia mainly while conducting certain eye examinations or procedures.

Common Uses:

Used for:
Mydriasis (Dilating the pupil);
Cycloplegia for certain diagnostic procedures and/or eye examination.

Off Label Uses:

None noted currently.

Side Effects:
Allergic reactions are also possible;
Behavioral disturbances;
Cardiorespiratory collapse in pediatric patients and some adults;
Dry mouth;
Stinging;
Headache;
Increased intraocular pressure;
Parasympathetic stimulation;
Photosensitivity;
Psychotic reactions;
Tachycardia or rapid heartbeat;
Temporary blurred vision;
Transient stinging sensation in the eyes.

Cautions / Warnings:

Meant for topical use only;
Not recommended in:
Pregnant women and nursing mothers;
People with primary glaucoma or potential glaucoma cases.
Advised not to drive or operate machinary post using this medication.

Drug Interactions:
Antihistamines like diphenhydramine, meclizine;
Antispasmodics like dicyclomine;
Certain anti-arrhythmic medications like quinidine; procainamide);
MAOIs like furazolidone; isocarboxazid;
Tricyclic antidepressants like amitriptyline.

I have been given tropicamide 1% for a number of years usually at about 6 month intervals to facilitate eye examinations and on the last but one occasion it was administered i suffered a breathing problem like breathing in air but nothing was being absorbed and i remember it was a long night of conscious breathing, this was the only occasion that i have experienced a problem with having tropicamide administered i remember also having a strong cup of coffee at the same time so i wonder if that may have caused an interaction. hope this is of help to anyone
