The generic name of this medication is methyldopa and brand name is Aldomet.

The active ingredient of this medication is methyldopa.

The inactive ingredients of this medication are: calcium disodium edetate; cellulose; citric acid; colloidal silicon dioxide; D&C Yellow 10; ethylcellulose; guar gum; hydroxypropyl methylcellulose; iron oxide; magnesium stearate; propylene glycol; talc; and titanium dioxide.

It is manufactured by MSD and distributed through Muller and Phipps.

It is primarily used in the treatment of high blood pressure.

Common Uses:

Aldomet is used to treat high blood pressure. It is effective when used alone or with other high blood pressure medications.

Off Label Uses:

None noted currently.

Side Effects:
Drowsiness during the first few weeks of therapy;
Fluid retention or weight gain;
Headache;
Weakness.

Cautions / Warnings:

Not recommended in people with:
Allergic reactions to this medication or any of its ingredients;
Liver disease (e.g., hepatitis or cirrhosis); history of liver disease caused by medications.

It is also not recommended in pregnanat women and nursing mothers.

Drug Interactions:
Antidepressants known as MAO inhibitors; including phenelzine sulfate and Tranylcypromine sulfate; Dextroamphetamine; and Imipramine;
Iron-containing products such as ferrous sulfate and ferrous gluconate;
Lithium;
Other blood pressure medications such as clonidine hydrochloride and verapamil; Hydrochloride;
Phenylpropanolamine (decongestant used in common cold remedies);
Propranolol;
Tolbutamide.
