Bret Michaels
Bret Michaels (1963—) Bret Michaels—lead singer for glam metal band Poison, Celebrity Apprentice contestant, and star of the VH1 reality show Rock of Love with Bret Michaels—was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at age 6. Although he laughs about people thinking he was shooting up heroin backstage when he was in fact injecting insulin, he makes no secret of the hard-partying lifestyle that once caused him to pass out in an…embarrassing situation. After fellow band member Rikki Rockett had to haul him off and give him an injection of glucagon so that he didn’t go into diabetic shock, he learned to moderate his lifestyle.
Michaels is, as of writing, in hospital undergoing tests after suffering a subarachnoid hemorrhage and a side effect called hyponatremia, a lack of sodium in the b
ody that can cause seizures. It’s marginally possible that his diabetes may have caused the hemorrhage. A 2007 University of Cincinnati study found that diabetics have a three to fourfold greater chance of suffering an intracerebral hemorrhage, often misdiagnosed as a subarachnoid hemorrhage. Other possible causes include an aneurysm, AVM (arteriovenous malformation), drug use, a stroke, or a delayed effect from a head injury Michaels suffered during a stage accident last June.
Having lived with diabetes from such a young age, Michaels is well used to managing the immune disorder. He exercises every day by working out, playing basketball, or riding a mountain bike; and he’s careful to control food portions. He takes six units of intermediate-acting NPH insulin each day plus fast-acting Humalog insulin as needed. While on tour, when exhaustion and stress can take a toll, he tests his blood glucose levels more often, even incorporating two breaks for testing into each show. Michaels frequently talks to diabetic kids about being self-reliant and tells them that if he can manage diabetes during the craziness of touring, they shouldn't have a problem.
