Nick Jonas
Nick Jonas (1992—) Nick Jonas, the youngest member and lead singer of the crazy-popular band The Jonas Brothers, discovered that he had type 1 diabetes in 2005 after he and his brother went swimming. The slender Nick had lost about 15 lbs. in two weeks, and his older brother freaked when he saw how skeletal Nick looked. In retrospect, said Nick, the signs had been there; he’d been uncharacteristically bad-tempered and constantly thirsty, and he’d been running to the bathroom all the time. He was immediately taken to hospital, where doctors found that his blood sugar had soared to 700 (normal blood glucose levels are 70 to 150). He initially checked his blood sugar about twelve times a day and injected himself with NovoLog with Lantus frequently, but became frustrated by the difficulty of t
he routine while keeping up a hectic pace on the road with the band.
Eventually Nick switched to using NovoLog insulin in Insulet’s OmniPod pump, which he wears on his upper arm. He can put FreeStyle test strips right into the pump so that he can check his insulin level frequently, although he may soon start using a continuous monitor. He’s got his A1c level down from 11-12% to 7-8% and keeps his blood sugar level at 150-175—high for most people, but right for him, because he is extremely active and tends to suffer from blood sugar dips.
Nick says that he eats whatever he wants. He enters carbs into the OmniPod, using the included database if he’s not sure how many carbs are in any particular food, and it tells him how much insulin he’ll need. If his blood sugar is dipping, he’ll often drink OJ for a fast fix, and he takes the vitamins and supplements his mom suggests.
