Elvis Presley (1935-1977), American singer and actor. Elvis was referred to as the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll due to his prominent influence on the musical genre. The singer was a symbol of teenage rebellion, and his style caused a great amount of controversy in the late 1950’s. Frank Sinatra said of Elvis at the time, “His kind of music is deplorable, a rancid smelling aphrodisiac. It fosters almost totally negative and destructive reactions in young people.” Regardless of his adversaries, Elvis had an outstandingly successful career in music and television, and has been inducted to four music halls of fame. He is regarded as one of 20th century pop culture’s most important figures.

26 Aug 2011 Elvis should be a poster child for drug abuse and addiction. Surrounded by people who didn't have the guts to confront him, left behind by people who pretty much took him to the cleaners (Priscilla, et al) Elvis never did manage to get his problem under control. Any addict knows that they're the last one to recognize a problem, and facts show he never really believed his use to be problematic. Had he been confronted by loved ones at a critical point he may have changed. My point here is that people believe Presley was either weak and stupid about his problem, or, even moreso, a victim of those around him (cash cow theory). Truth is, both were in play in his life. You can't point the finger (or give him it) at Dr. Nick. Or at Presley. Once your strung out on drugs your life becomes a mess, and, even Elivs couldn't get righted. Some folks out there who tend to blame everything from habits to work record on that person give Presley a pass about drugs abuse and blame it on those around him. I believe he could have rehabed out of the mess had he been forced to see the end was near. There were addiction centers then, just not as many nor as well promoted. Elvis could have gone anywhere, private center, etc, and dried out.
