Common Uses:

This medication is used to treat moderate to severe pain. Short-acting morphine is taken as needed for pain. Extended-release morphine is for use when around-the-clock pain relief is needed.

Off Label Uses:

None noted currently.

Side Effects:
Shallow breathing, slow heartbeat;
Seizure (convulsions);
Cold, clammy skin;
Confusion;
Severe weakness or dizziness; or
Feeling light-headed, fainting.

Cautions / Warnings:

Not recommended in people with:
Allergic reactions to this medication or any of its ingredients;
Asthma, COPD, sleep apnea, or other breathing disorders;
Liver or kidney disease;
Curvature of the spine;
Epilepsy or other seizure disorder;
Gallbladder disease;
Enlarged prostate, urination problems;
History of drug or alcohol addiction.

Drug Interactions:
MAO inhibitor such as isocarboxazid (Marplan), phenelzine (Nardil), rasagiline (Azilect), selegiline (Eldepryl, Emsam), or tranylcypromine.

The generic name of this medication is morphine and brand names are Avinza, Kadian, Morphine IR, MS Contin, MSIR, Oramorph SR, Roxanol. The active ingredient of this medication is morphine sulfate and inactive ingredients are edetate disodium, purified water and sodium benzoate. This medication is used to treat moderate to severe pain. Short-acting morphine is taken as needed for pain. Extended-release morphine is for use when around-the-clock pain relief is needed.
