Description | Uses & Side Effects | Warnings

Oral contraceptive that contains two hormones, progestin and estrogen, both of which prevent pregnancy.
Norgestimate and ethinyl estradiol are the active ingredients of this medicaiton.

Prevents pregnancy.
Regularizes periods;
Reduces blood loss and dysmenorrhea or painful periods;
Reduces the risk of ovarian cysts.

Functions in three ways as listed below:
Firstly, by preventing ovulation or release of an egg;
Secondly, by altering cervical mucus, so the sperm cannot fertilize the sperm;
Thirdly, by changing lining of womb it becomes difficult for the fertilized egg to implant itself and grow.

Common Uses:

Oral contraceptive that:
Prevents pregnancy;
Regularises periods;
Decreases painful periods;
Minimizes the risk of ovarian cysts.

Off Label Uses:

Used in the treatment of:
Acne;
Dysmenorrhea or painful periods;
Irregular menstrual periods;
Heavy menstrual bleeding;
Premenstrual dysphoric disorder or PMDD.

Side Effects:
Abdominal cramps;
Abdominal bloating;
Acne could get better or sometimes might get worse;
Breast tenderness;
Breast enlargement;
Dizziness;
Dyspnea;
Fainting spells;
Headaches;
Increased vaginal fluids;
Irregular periods (first few months);
Melasma;
Missed periods (first few months);
Mood swings;
Nausea;
Rashes;
Slurred speech;
Shortness of breath;
Sudden heavy bleeding;
Vaginal bleeding or spotting between periods;
Vision changes;
Vomiting;
Weakness in the upper and lower extremities;
Weight gain or loss;
Worsening of existing migraines.

Cautions / Warnings:

Not recommended in people that are allergic to any estrogens or progestins;
Not recommended in people with:
Abnormal breast exams;
Carcinoma of the breast or endometrium;
Depression;
Diabetes related renal, opthalmic, blood vessel conditions;
Gall bladder conditions;
Headaches;
High cholesterol levels;
History of stroke and/or blood clots;
Hypertension;
Kidney problems;
Liver conditions;
Recent pregnancy;
Thyroid problems;
Not recommended for use in pregnant women and nursing mothers;
Smoking cigarettes and using tobacco while on birth control pills increases risk of cardiovascular diseases and stroke.

Dapsone;
Felbamate;
Griseofulvin;
HIV protease inhibitors like, amprenavir, nelfinavir, ritonavir;
Modafinil;
Morphine;
Nevirapine;
Phenylbutazone;
Raloxifene;
Rifamycins like rifampin;
Seizure medications like barbiturates, carbamazepine, phenytoin, lamotrigine, topiramate;
Sodium tetradecyl sulfate;
