Common Uses:

This medication is used to treat sneezing; runny nose; itching, watery eyes; hives; rashes; itching; and other symptoms of allergies and the common cold.

Off Label Uses:

Side Effects:
Sleepiness, fatigue, or dizziness;
Headache;
Dry mouth; or
Difficulty urinating or an enlarged prostate.

Cautions / Warnings:

Not recommended in people with:
Allergic reactions to this medication or any of its ingredients;
Glaucoma or increased pressure in the eye;
Stomach ulcer;
Enlarged prostate, bladder problems or difficulty urinating;
Overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism);
Asthma.

Drug Interactions:
Anxiety or sleep medicines such as alprazolam (Xanax), diazepam (Valium), chlordiazepoxide (Librium), temazepam (Restoril), or triazolam (Halcion);

Medications for depression such as amitriptyline (Elavil), doxepin (Sinequan), nortriptyline (Pamelor), fluoxetine (Prozac), sertraline (Zoloft), or paroxetine (Paxil); or

Any other medications that make you feel drowsy, sleepy, or relaxed.

The generic name of this medication is diphenhydramine and brand names are Aler-Tab, Allergy, Allermax, Altaryl, Benadryl Allergy, Benadryl DF, Benadryl Dye Free Allergy. The active ingredient of this medication is diphenhydramine hydrochloride. This medication is used to treat sneezing; runny nose; itching, watery eyes; hives; rashes; itching; and other symptoms of allergies and the common cold.

About Diphenhydramine

Diphenhydramine hydrochloride (trade name Benadryl is produced by J&J or Dimedrol outside the U.S. Nytol as a sleeping pill) is an over-the-counter (OTC) antihistamine, sedative and hypnotic. It may also be used for the treatment of extrapyramidal side effects of typical antipsychotics. It is a member of the ethanolamine class of antihistaminergic agents. The brand Benadryl is currently trademarked in the United States by Pfizer; however, many drug store chains and retail outlets manufacture less-costly generic versions under their own store brands, often sold in boxes that share similarities in packaging size, colors and appearance of the Pfizer pill.
