Olivia Newton-John
Olivia Newton-John (1948-), British-Australian singer and actress. Newton-John is a four-time Grammy award winner and she starred with John Travolta in the movie musical and pop phenomenon Grease in 1978. Grease is the highest grossing movie musical of all time and the soundtrack spent 12 weeks at number one. That year Newton-John won the People’s Choice award for Favorite Motion Picture Actress, and she was nominated for a Golden Globe. Newton-John continued to sing and act, and in 1981 she released her most successful studio album, Physical, which went double platinum.
Newton-John found out she had breast cancer in 1992, at the age of 44. She said, "I went for a check up because I found a lump. The mammogram was negative and the needle biopsy also came back OK. But I wasn't f
eeling well and I sensed something wasn't right. So I pressed for more tests… [When I heard the diagnosis] I made a decision that I was going to be OK. I had a sense of humor which really saved me," she said.
Of her experience, Newton-John has said "I think the first days were the most scary… but I laughed a lot. The only way I could really cope with it was laughing. Laughter was my respite. Of course, at night when I was by myself, I was frightened. There were moments when I didn't know what was going to happen. You cannot face something like that and not consider death.” She made a decision that she was not going to give into it, and used a lot of positive affirmation techniques. She also started taking better care of herself, and used Eastern techniques of meditation, yoga, and homeopathy to supplement Western treatments, such as her partial mastectomy, reconstructive surgery, and chemotherapy.
Since her diagnosis and recovery, she became an advocate for a breast self-examination product called Liv-Kit. "Regular self exam is very important. The earlier you find a problem, the better chance you have of recovery. It's very treatable today.”
Newton-John’s cancer went into remission, and she has had no recurrence. She has said of her struggle, “I see it as a gift… I know it sounds strange. But I don’t think I would have grown without that experience.”

Health tip of the day:
If you use a steroid inhaler like Advair for asthma or COPD, rinse, gargle and SPIT immediately after inhaling. Not rinsing heightens the risk of thrush, but swallowing the stuff puts steroids where they don't need to be. I used to follow my morning puff with a swig of coffee until my doctor put me straight! If you do get thrush (candida) a course of probiotics can help, as can eliminating sugar from your diet. If a plain water rinse doesn't work, try using mouthwash--either a commercial brand, or try putting a few drops of tea tree oil in the water, or use one part cider vinegar to two parts water.
