Brittany Murphy
Brittany Murphy (1977-2009), American actress. Murphy starred in films such as the 1995 hit Clueless, 8 Mile, Girl, Interrupted, and Sin City.
Murphy was born in Atlanta, Georgia, and her parents split up at the age of two. She spent some time in New Jersey with her mother before the two moved to Los Angeles for Brittany to pursue her acting career. She starred in her first television series at the age of 14, and appeared in several television programs including Blossom, Frasier, Party of Five, and Boy Meets World. Murphy also did the voice of Luanne on the television series King of the Hill.
Murphy was a type two diabetic and she also suffered from a thyroid condition. She reportedly claimed that she never took illegal drugs, saying that she couldn't even take over
-the-counter medications because they would make her "heart explode." Type diabetes can be hard on the heart, and the American Diabetes Association has said that "women with type 2 diabetes are more likely to have a heart attack, and at a younger age than women without diabetes."
Several years ago, Murphy lost a fair bit of weight and was rumored to have an eating disorder. However, she denied this claim and any reports of drug abuse. She said, "No, just for the record I have never tried it [cocaine or any other illegal drug] in my entire life...I would’ve had interventions. We’re all very close. If anything is even mildly wrong — from a heartbreak to a life decision — the whole family weighs in on it. So I wouldn’t be allowed, and I wasn’t raised that way."
The young actress was found collapsed in the shower at the home that she shared with her husband, British producer Simon Monjack. It has been rumored that she had been abusing prescription drugs, and that Monjack was a bad influence on her and an alcoholic. She was rushed to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead from cardiac arrest.
Murphy will be examined for toxicity of drugs and alcohol, against her husband's wishes. It is uncertain if the cause of death was due to her diabetes or to substance abuse at this time.

Health tip of the day:
New research suggests that bacteria in tobacco can lead to infection - even just by handling the tobacco products. The researcher was able to isolate and grow some strains of bacteria in a petri dish, and suspects that there are up to a thousand bacterial species in tobacco products. The team found over a hundred bacterial matches in their research, including: "Campylobacter, which can cause food poisoning and Guillain-Barre Syndrome; Clostridium, which causes food poisoning and pneumonias; Corynebacterium, also associated with pneumonias and other diseases; E. coli; Klebsiella, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Stenotrophomonas maltophilia, all of which are associated not only with pneumonia but also with urinary tract infections; and a number of Staphylococcus species that underlie the most common and serious hospital-associated infections."
