The Patch

How it works: The patch is applied to the skin on the first day of the menstrual cycle. The patches are replaced every seven days, and there is one week out of the month when no patch is worn. The patch delivers estrogen and progestin into the body, similarly to combo pills. This mixture of hormones thickens the cervical mucus at the base of the cervix, preventing sperm from entering, and also prevents ovulation.
The lowdown: The effectiveness of the patch is about equal to that of the combo pills, and might even be better than the typical combo pill user (which is slightly irregular). The patch can have negative interactions when used in conj
unction with certain antibiotics, antifungals, anticonvulsants, or other medications. In one study, after one year 12% of women discontinued use of the patch because of negative effects, which included nausea, reaction at the application site, breast discomfort, headache, and emotional troubles. Other negatives include heightened chance of thrombosis (blood clot), and no protection from sexually transmitted illnesses. On the upside, periods might be lighter and less painful, and compared to the oral contraceptives, the patch may interact better with antibiotics.
