How it works: A diaphragm is a latex or silicone barrier that is inserted prior to sex . It creates a seal against the walls of the vagina and covers the cervix, preventing sperm from passing through. It is often used in conjunction with a spermicidal jelly. The diaphragm is often left in after intercourse for up to eight hours to ensure efficacy. A diaphragm lasts two years and the woman must be fitted for one in the doctor’s office. However, a new diaghragm may need to be fitted if a substantial amount of weight is gained or lost.
The lowdown: Benefits of using a diaphragm are that they only have to be used during intercourse, most partners report that they can’t feel the diaphragm during
sex, they are not as expensive as other methods of contraception, and they can be used as a device to collect menstrual fluid (similar to the Diva Cup or other menstrual cups). They have no effect on a woman’s hormones, unlike many of the other contraceptive forms. They do not affect fertility, have very few side effects, and can be carried easily and discreetly. Diaphragms also may offer some protection from sexually transmitted infections and pelvic inflammatory disease.
Downsides of using a diaphragm are that they increase risk of a urinary tract infection, as well as toxic shock syndrome if left in for more than 24 hours. Some women complain that they are messy, difficult to insert and keep in place, and that they experience leaking of spermicide or sperm after intercourse. Also, those who are allergic to latex or spermicide may not want to use this method.
