How it works: NuvaRing uses a combination of low dose, time-released estrogen and progestin hormones for contraception. The ring itself is plastic and flexible and is inserted into the vagina for three weeks, then removed for one week. Similarly to the other combination hormone methods, the NuvaRing functions by thickening the cervical mucus at the base of the cervix, which prevents sperm from entering, and also by preventing ovulation.
