How it works: A condom is a latex or plastic sheath that is worn on the penis during sex. It prevents semen from entering the vagina and collects it in the tip of the condom. Condoms are meant to be used one time and then discarded.
The lowdown: Condoms have been used for 400 years at least. They are inexpensive, simple to use, have few side effects, and may prevent spread of some sexually transmitted diseases. They are hormone free and don’t require clinic visits for fitting. The typical pregnancy rate using condoms is 10-18%, while
perfect use (meaning condoms were used every single time) is about 2% per year. There is a chance that a condom may break during intercourse or slip off, but the largest complaint is that people don’t like the feeling of wearing or using a condom and that sometimes they run out at inopportune times.
