The generic name of this medication is not noted currently. Brand names are Rolaids, Tums, Gaviscon, Maalox and Mylanta Antacid.

Tums is manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline.

The active ingredient of this medication is calcium carbonate.

Mainly used to relieve the uncomfortable symptoms of acid indigestion, heartburn, gas, and sour stomach.

Common Uses:

This medication is used to relieve the uncomfortable symptoms of acid indigestion, heartburn, gas, and sour stomach.

Off Label Uses:

Side Effects:
Chalky taste
Constipation
Diarrhea
Increased thirst
Stomach cramps

Cautions / Warnings:

Not advisable during pregnancy and in nursing mothers.
Not advisable in people with kidney disease.

I have had my colon removed due to Crohn's disease 20 years ago. I decided to use tums instead of my prescription Pepcid medication. What a big mistake that was. I was happy that they gave me "normal bowel movements and thought I found a solution for my loose stools. 3 weeks after taking it as DIRECTED on the liable. I ended up in the ER for fecal impaction. It was so painful! They helped manually break it up along with an enama. They sent me home without testing me to see if there was more. That night I passed another one by myself. This was 2 years ago and I am now permently damaged from it. I now have small bowel bacteria overgrowth and need strong antibiotics for the unseen future. It took 2 years working with my doctor to resolve this issue. I ended up in the hospital for 5 days. They finally started me on 2 antibiotics which got rid of the problem until I stopped using them. 4 days later the infection was back. Please don't use tums on a daily basis or you could end up like me. It's a very painful and unpleasant thing to go through.
