Warnings
The generic name of this medication is acarbose and brand name is Precose.
The active ingredients of this medication are acarbose and sustained release polymers (eg HPMC, ethyl cellulose, Kollidon).
Acarbose is Manufactured by Sun Pharmaceutical.
Mainly used in the treatment of Type II diabetes. It is administered along with diet and exercise.
Common Uses:
This medication is used for the treatment of Type II diabetes. It is administered along with diet and exercise.
Off Label Uses:
The off label uses of this medication include that it may be used alone or in combination with other antidiabetic medicines.
Side Effects:
Bloating
Diarrhea
Gas
Nausea
Stomach pain
Vomiting
Cautions / Warnings:
Not advisable in patients allergic to any ingredient in acarbose.
Not advisable in patients who have blockage of the stomach or intestine.
Not advisable in patients with long-term (chronic) bowel inflammation, colon ulcers.
Not advisable in patients with diabetic ketoacidosis.
Not advisable during pregnancy and pre-pregnancy.
Drug Interactions:
Anticoagulants (eg warfarin)
Calcium channel blockers (eg verapamil) corticosteroids (eg prednisone)
Diuretics (eg hydrochlorothiazide)
Insulin or sulfonylureas (eg glyburide)
Digoxin

About Acarbose
Acarbose is an anti-diabetic drug used to treat type 2 diabetes mellitus and, in some countries, prediabetes. It is sold in Europe under the brand name Glucobay (Bayer AG), in North USA as Precose (Bayer AG), and in Canada as Prandase (Bayer AG). It is an inhibitor of alpha glucosidase, an enteric enzyme that releases glucose from larger carbohydrates.
