Frank McCourt
Frank McCourt (1930—2009) Pulitzer prize-winning author of 'Angela’s Ashes', '‘Tis,' and 'Teacher Man.' McCourt was diagnosed with melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, in 2009 and underwent chemotherapy.
His treatment was complicated by meningitis. According to doctors, about 5 out of 100 cancer patients will suffer carcinomatous meningitis, a condition that occurs when cancer cells get into the meninges, thin sheets of body tissue surrounding the brain and spine.
Meningitis means inflammation of the meninges. Carcinomatous meningitis is meningitis that acts like a cancer and can cause symptoms such as weakness, confusion, and headaches; it is diagnosed via a lumbar puncture or MRI. Currently the only treatments are chemotherapy injected into the spinal flui
d or radiotherapy to the brain.
As of writing, it’s not known whether McCourt had this form of meningitis or the more common form that is caused by viruses or bacteria.
