Steve Jobs
Steve Jobs (1955—) As co-founder and CEO of Apple, Inc., Steve Jobs has won plaudits for his creativity and business savvy. He’s also hit the news multiple times as investors and the media try to figure out just what’s going on with his health.
In 2003 Jobs discovered that he had a rare form of pancreatic cancer, an islet cell neuroendocrine tumor. It can be treated surgically without having to undergo radiation and chemotherapy, but as a Buddhist and strict vegetarian, Jobs tried alternative therapies—including a rigorous diet—for nine months before reportedly undergoing a Whipple procedure at Stanford University Medical Clinic in 2004.
The Whipple, or pancreatoduodenectomy, is a complex procedure that removes the head of the pancreas plus parts of the stomach, the b
ile duct, and the small intestine. The remains of the organs are then stitched together so that the pancreas can continue delivering insulin and digestive enzymes to the body.
The procedure was apparently successful. In January 2009, however, a noticeably gaunt Jobs announced first that he had a simple hormone imbalance; then that the problem was more complex than he’d thought and he would be taking a medical leave. He then had a liver transplant in Tennessee, where the waiting list for such a transplant is shorter than in California.
According to Dr. James D. Eason, program director and chief of transplantation at the Methodist University Hospital Transplant Institute: “He received a liver transplant because he was the patient with the highest MELD score (Model for End-Stage Liver Disease) of his blood type and, therefore, the sickest patient on the waiting list at the time a donor organ became available. Mr. Jobs is now recovering well and has an excellent prognosis.”
Slow-growing islet cell pancreatic tumors commonly metastasize to another organ, usually the liver, in about 75 percent of patients.
Jobs is currently back at work at Apple.
